What Is Kiai?

To a beginner the shouts, grunts and, screams made in the dojo seem very alien. Surely you don't have to make all of this noise just to learn Karate? In this article I will explain what Kiai is, how to Kiai, why we do it and, how Kiai improves your Karate.

The japanese word "Kiai" is a combination of two words:

"Ki" is the Japanese translation of the Chinese word "Chi" or "Qi". Chi is a word with many meanings. The meaning used to explain "Ki" is typically that used by traditional chinese medicine, the spirit or energy within the human body concerned with breathing and circulation.
